Belongingness is the human emotional need to be an accepted member of a group. Whether it is family, friends, co-workers, a religion, or something else, people tend to have an 'inherent' desire to belong and be an important part of something greater than themselves. This implies a relationship that is greater than simple acquaintance or familiarity. The need to belong is the need to give and receive attention to and from others.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belongingness
This week we have been focused on the word “Belonging”. In our whole school assembly (still being done via TEAMS- hopefully we can all be together soon) we spoke about what it means to belong to something, the groups we may belong to such as clubs and teams, what it means to belong to our family and how it feels when we feel we belong and how we feel when we don’t.
We spoke about the fact that to belong to something allows us to feel accepted and valued for who we are, and we talked about what makes a group feel strongly connected. One of the things that we noticed was that all groups have are rules or values that everyone agrees to abide by and uphold. They guide the way we behave and how we interact and communicate with one another. They help everyone feel safe and happy.
Our TOPSHAM values of, Trust and Respect, Opportunities for all, Partnerships, Health and Happiness, Aspiration and Attitudes to Learning and Motivation are ones we are committed to striving to uphold; they underpin all we do.
Over the course of this week and the coming few weeks we will focus on our school values to help us continue to feel reconnected and support us all to remember and know that we all belong to The Topsham School. This was something expressed so well by two children in Year 3; we belong to our family, we belong to our school which is like a big family, and we belong to the world which is like an enormous family. What a lovely way to see it. One big family!
Have a wonderful weekend, enjoying time with your families.
