Over the course of this year we have been working with our children to focus on understanding and developing our Learning Powers. Our work has been grounded in the work of Guy Claxton and we have linked our understanding to the work of James Nottingham and the Learning Pit and the research of Carol Dweck and the ‘Power of Yet’.
Learning Powers are within each one of us and we all need them to be able to work through challenges and learn new things. Understanding what each one of them actually means and how they help us in our learning creates independent, intrinsically motivated individuals.
The children have explored each Learning Power, finding out what each means in practice and over the Spring Term they continued this work, alongside voting on pictures or icons that they feel best represents each Learning Power. We now have all of these in place, and I thought it would be really helpful to share them with you. There are quite a few, so this week I will share the Learning Powers linked to the Emotional Aspects of Learning: Feeling.
The overarching Learning Power for this aspect of learning is Resilience. Under this umbrella are; Managing Distractions, Perseverance, Noticing, Bouncing Back and Practising.
We have defined these as follows:
Resilience
I am resilient. I know learning is hard and can feel scary, but I am ready to take risks in my learning and work with determination to achieve my goal. I know I can’t do everything yet, but I know I can learn anything I need to if I am willing to do my best all the time.
Managing Distractions
I manage any distractions and concentrate on my own learning to finish the tasks/challenges given to me in the time set.
Perseverance
I keep going in my learning, even when it feels really hard. I know that feeling frustrated, worried, excited, confused is part of learning and I accept this. I DON’T give up.
Noticing
I look carefully at information given to me, or around me and notice patterns and/or details I need to help me complete my learning.
Bouncing Back
I know that when I am learning I will make mistakes and fail. I brush myself off, take a deep breath and bounce back to have another go.
Practising
I know that I need to practise to get better in my learning and remember things.
Please spend some time talking with your child/children talking about these powers and how they help in learning. Which ones do you feel really confident in using, which ones do you need to develop?
Have a good weekend,
Mrs Pipe
