Creative shelter building was the aim today- design and build and shelter that would keep you dry through the harsh Dartmoor weather. And what a set of shelters were built! The children spent the day in the woods collecting a huge range of very large branches and very small brush to make their shelters strong and waterproof; five well thought-out, carefully put together shelters were judged at the end of the day, after a lot of hard work and collaboration. The children even got to make damper bread throughout the session! And again......what a fab day!
We spent the day exploring the moors, heading out on a loop around Coombestone, stopping to play games, scramble on tors and splash in the river after lunch! We had an evening visit from Mrs Whitehead who came up to join us for dinner and Mrs Finnegan has joined us for the rest of the week; Mrs Ostrer has now headed home. Last night was campfire night! Silly jokes, riddles and some not-so-scary stories accompanied toasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate. Looking forward to shelter building and fire lighting today! What an incredible day we had yesterday! The sun shone as we headed out to Hound Tor for a day of climbing, weaselling and scrambling.
We couldn't have been prouder of all the children for their awesome attitude towards the challenges the faced. They worked so supportively with each other, really pushed themselves and made each other laugh all day! We returned to the centre tired, but after our sneaky, sugary snacks - which Mrs Wannel, Mrs Ostrer and I have continued to promise not to eat ourselves - and plenty of water, we played outside while waiting for dinner (a yummy chicken curry). During the evening, the common room turned in to a fashion show! The children were challenged to create an outfit out of nothing but newspaper and tape - in only 45 mins! The results were surprisingly brilliant given the time - original and creative and again, produced only by great team work. Another great day achieved! Hello from Dartmoor!
We all arrived safely and the sun was shining! We spent the afternoon playing team games and exploring the area. The children have worked brilliantly together and have persevered through some tough challenges. There was a bit of a surprise at mud in tunnels- but all had a go and ventured in! Some came out the other side and some decided it wasn't for them. We were proud of every attempt! All of us ate really well with delicious pasta and chocolate pudding- most having seconds- and flapjack for supper (including Bessie's blueberry flapjack!) Everyone slept well and we are ready for today's adventures on Hound Tor- climbing, scrambling and weaselling. |
