Learning to learn
School is all about curiosity and learning. Learning new facts and information, learning new skills, learning how to be with others and build friendships, learning how to be challenged and how to challenge ourselves and learning that learning never stops; there is no holy grail or end point of …….ah…….I now know everything there is to know and I will never need to ask questions or grapple with new ideas ever again.
Thank goodness! Learning is endless and brings with it endless opportunities. But in order to be able to grasp these opportunities, we need to be willing and able to keep taking risks, keep asking questions and keep wanting to learn.
Learning is hard and sometimes, it’s really hard, but it’s also worth the struggle because of the pride and excitement we feel when we have succeeded and achieved something that we found so difficult at the start.
Research has shown that children who understand the learning process and the emotions that go along with learning become, resilient, life-long learners with the ability to adapt to new challenges and be open to new opportunities; they go on to have rich and fulfilling lives because they feel empowered. They know that they have all the skills and strategies, within themselves, needed to succeed and overcome the bumps and dips in life. They know what to do when the going gets tough.
With this in mind, next week, we are embarking on a whole school focus on Learning to Learn. Children will be facing different challenges that will support them understand the different ‘Learning Powers’ we all need to be good learners. These ‘powers’ include the power to:
Maybe this weekend share with your child/children a time when you really struggled to learn/achieve something. What was challenging and how did you overcome these challenges? How did it feel at the start of learning something new or starting on a new venture? How did you feel when you succeeded? The teachers have planned from great learning challenges and I am looking forward to discover what the children learn.
Have a lovely weekend and see you all again on Monday.
